*We welcome the submission from all Asian filmmakers!*
Established since November 2022, HK.kino.Berlin is a cultural platform for screenings and exhibitions about Hong Kong independent cinema and video works in the heart of Berlin. Considering the censorship practices that the government aims to increase, we uphold the freedom of expression through films.

In summer 2023, we decided to expand the diversity of the video works, as well as the size of the audience. We hope to include more art films with special storytelling skills made by the filmmakers from Asian countries. We aim to enhance people’s awareness of Asian cinema.

What is "longing"? It's the desire of craving something that is unattainable or distant. Especially after the mass migration wave in Hong Kong, we are longing for a connection, a sense of belonging, or a place that doesn't exist. These films exemplify the artists' observation in depicting individuals' intimate physical relationships and emotional journeys through reconstructing memories.

Directed by Heiwa Wong

POV, literally stands for Point of View (a category of pornographic films), is a dance film concerning a duo relationship between two beings. Duo, in the context of dance, often implies that one takes the lead and the other follows (and their roles can be swapped or blurred). Taking the elements of erotic movements from sexual intercourse, POV displays the dynamics of a duo relationship in an exposed-but-obscure condition where chemistry can be observed. The tension (not necessarily intensive) between two beings interweaves with intimacy and forms a hard-to-precisely-describe relationship. “Let’s have a duo, shall we?”

Short Film 2) Memory Palace (HK 2020 - 2021 – 17’15”)

Directed by Dorothy Cheung

Memory Palace is a moving image work exploring memories attached to the personal objects of ethnic Chinese people in Manchester. These objects tell extremely personal stories that reflect the complexity of living between two worlds and navigating multiple identities, not only as an ethnic Chinese person living in the UK, but also as an LGBTQ individual, senior citizen, adoptee, artist, or first-generation immigrant. The work challenges conventional understandings of the Chinese community, questioning what it means to be an ethnic Chinese individual in this city and highlighting the great spectrum of identities beyond nationality.

Directed by YAN Wai Yin

Tugging Diary documents a footbridge in Hong Kong during the period of protest, rallies, and strikes. Both the internet and physical spaces act as critical communication platforms. Information circulates more widely and rapidly outside the mainstream media. These messages are continuously being altered, removed, renewed, or overlaid with other information.

Directed by YUNG Tsz Hong

Ning is from Mainland China. She moved to Hong Kong to live with her local boyfriend. The sudden death of her boyfriend made her need to re-adjust to everything in life. The story travels through Ning's thoughts and dreams, thinking about the relationship between people and the city as a stranger vision.

There are at least 14 feature or short films being banned from public screening in Hong Kong; however, not only the documentaries that are directly related to the protest being censored, there are also experimental videos or dramas that are considered as endorsing, supporting, glorifying the activities that might endanger national security. This screening event conveys a selection of short films from Hong Kong and Taiwan, which did not meet Hong Kong censors’ approval under Hong Kong's New Film Censorship.

Directed by Wu Zi-en

Set in the near future, an old man takes his grandson Sammy on a long journey. Travelling from the far south, his sole purpose is to visit his only son, a long-detained political prisoner charged with secession and subversion. A subdued conversation ensues as the incarcerated tries to communicate with his silent son. Before the time is up and he is taken away, he pleads: ‘My son, do not let them make you forget me.’ The desperate roar is his last reactionary appeal echoing under the peaceful silence of the new order. Shot in black-and-white, this cautionary tale by director WU Zi-en is written out of imagination for the future and the resolution to never forget.

The director chose to set the film in Taiwan and during the island’s own ‘White Terror’ period, as he is worried that Taiwan may fall under the Communist Party rule. He described it as a fable about Taiwan’s imagined future. The film did not meet Hong Kong censors’ approval.

Directed by Erica Kwok

A girl with a mysterious background arrives at the city, whose existence gradually becomes as light as the floating air. In the dark night of a chaotic age, must we live like spectres?

It is an experimental film featuring metaphors about “the social unrest and what happened in the city” in recent years. The film received a “special mention” in the 27th ifva Awards, however it cannot pass the Censorship Authority as the authority said it could incite hatred of the government and it contained “ungrounded statements” that could mislead viewers into thinking the government abuses its powers to curb the protests.
